Abalone are commercially valuable molluscs in many countries due to their highly palatable muscular foot. Sustainable management and enhancement of both wild fishery and cultured abalone stocks requires greater understanding of the genetic and molecular characteristics of the species. Despite the economic importance of abalone worldwide there is little publicly available genetic data to support research in abalone species, and much of it is spread over disparate resources.
The Abalomics Portal is provided by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) of Australia to act as a communal repository for all abalone ‘omics data resources. It is intended to promote research collaboration, provide easy access to ‘omic information through an easy to use web-interface. The data in this website is provided by community members and comes with a wealth of knowledge based on experience working ‘omics data from a wide variety of abalone species worldwide including annotations and biological information.
The portal is home to the first draft of the abalone reference genome, Haliotis laevigata. The abalone community encourages all researchers with an interest in abalone or molluscs to join our efforts and become collaborators in an International Abalone Genome Consortium to improve this and other valuable abalone genomic resources.
